Division Command

Firstly, we’d like to thank you for your help! The role of officer is voluntary. It comes with the prestige of a higher ranking than members but also comes with a lot more work. If you are reading this you have been selected as a Division Commander or a Division Vice.

Commanding a Division within DI is a very important role. You are right in the centre of the command structure and you ensure information and orders flow between leadership to members and back. You need to be smart, take initiative and anticipate what clan leadership need from you. You also need to keep a track of the teams under you to ensure the orders you pass on are being carried out. For this to happen you need to be able to give clear and concise orders to your team leaders.

This guide will provide you with the information you need to become a Division Commander/Vice and should always be referred to for assistance in your role as Division Commander/Vice in the future.

The guide has been divided into chapters, and structured to help provide easy access to the various aspects of your role. All chapters are hyperlinked in the index on the right hand side to make navigation easier.

You should consider any information you are given in officer discussions on TS or PMs on Forums to be private and it should only be discussed with other officers. Also any information given to you in confidence by users should also be treated private and only discussed with officers that require the information.

The Role of a Division Commander

As Division Commander you are responsible for managing your Division.

Your key responsibilities are:

  • Head of a Division (2-9 Teams).
    • Get regular feedback from your Vice regarding the status of your teams.
    • Provide regular feedback to your Legion Commander regarding the status of your Division and the progress on objectives.
    • Keep your Division Compliant. (See ‘Achieving and Maintaining Honour‘ for more detail.
  • Provide the leadership and strategy for their Division.
    • Commanding the Division in accordance with DI policy and Code of Ops and to help achieve the goals established by Di HQ Leadership.
    • Find out what Leadership wants you and your Division to do. Ensure you get the “What” “When” “Why” from them, and if you’re unfamiliar with the task ask the “How” as well.
    • Create Monthly Team Objectives and assign them to the Division’s Team Leaders (based on the Division Objectives assigned to Commanders by Leadership).
  • Responsible for ensuring their Division remains compliant with the Code of Ops.
    • Ensure you understand every facet of the Code of Operations in detail. Don’t just read it, understand it. For you to be able to lead a division by the guidelines and policy set within this clan, you must understand the Code of Ops.
    • Enforce Chain of Command in the Division.
    • As an Officer, you are able to strike members. You are expected to do so when they do not abide by the Code of Ops. If you let one member/officer get away with something, others will follow suit. DI prizes itself on its discipline and loyalty, like such of what the Roman Legions used to be, don’t allow that standard to drop.
    • Mentoring & training the Division Officers

As well as your Division Commander responsibilities all Division officers will occasionally be asked to attend meetings or give their feedback on various DI topics.

The Role of a Division Vice

As Division Vice you are responsible for helping the Division Commander manage your Division.

Your key responsibilities are:

  • Second-in-Command of a Division.
    • Get regular feedback from your Team leaders regarding the status of your teams.
    • Provide regular feedback to your Commander regarding the status of your teams.
    • Keep your Division Compliant. (See ‘Achieving and Maintaining Honour‘ for more detail.
    • Assist in Commanding the Division in accordance with DI policy and Code of Ops and to help achieve the goals established by respective Division Commanders.
    • Your team leaders should be checking regularly to see if any of their members have met the requirements for promotion. Check with them to be sure this is done. When you are notified of a promotion, ensure it is done.
    • Acknowledging accepted Initiates in Initiate Applications and ensure they are assigned to a Team.
    • Enforce Chain of Command in the Division.
    • Enforce discipline within Division (especially TeamSpeak and forums).
    • Support the Division Commander’s compliance requirements by ensuring enough Division Events are being created to meet compliance.
    • Be the host for Division Events unless otherwise stated.
    • Organise other more complicated events (such as Social Events or Tournaments).
    • Inspect and manage the quality and quantity of Team Events created by Team Leaders.
  • Train and mentor Junior Division Officers.
    • If your officers don’t go to Morning Tea, it’s up to you to find out why and get that fixed. You should want your division to advance/progress in DI, so help them do so.
    • If one of your officers are not up to the skill level you need to them to be, you should spend time to train them. Run through some stuff 1 on 1 with them. Do not run them down for not being at a good enough standard. It is your job to ensure you division is staffed with capable officers and you must bring any below your standards up to the standards.

As well as your Vice responsibilities all Division officers will occasionally be asked to attend meetings or give their feedback on various DI topics.

Leadership Skills

Over the course of this segment you will learn the basic skills relevant to leading a team of people under any circumstances – not just DI – with the addition of our own flavour to things. Take a moment to read over these keywords it’s IMPORTANT you understand them:

Professionalism, Initiative, Knowledge, Commitment

In no particular order those are the things you need to succeed here. In breakdown:


The skill, good judgement, and polite behaviour that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well

Lead by example

What kind of behaviour do you want to see from our member base? Show it to them. Consider what we value highest as a community. Organisation, teamwork, maturity, excellence. Demonstrate each of those things in everything you do.

Be prepared

Have an organisational system. Some Division Commanders use Microsoft onenote, with hyperlinked pages and notebooks. Other suggestions is Google Docs (especially spreadsheets for managing and tracking your member’s progress) Find the method that works for you, some people prefer notepad files and one officer even uses sticky notes all over his bedroom! Without some way of keeping track of information and being able to access it with ease true organization is impossible. There can be so many things over the course of a day that come up it’s far too easy to get distracted and forget things – once you start doing that it’s a slippery slope to burnout and a pile of things all left undone.

Take responsibility

Understand what exactly your role is and make sure you are doing it well. When something does go wrong – and it will, nobody is perfect – own up to it and ask for help. The situation will be resolved with much less anguish if you approach your superior and simply explain. Attempting to hide the error and push the blame onto someone else for your mistakes will only cause tension, compound the original problem and make people both up and down the chain of command lose respect for you.


The ability to assess and initiate things independently – without having to be micro managed.

“use your initiative, imagination, and common sense”

Once you understand both your role and the chain of command fully this will allow you a great amount of latitude to act on your own initiative within the boundaries of our organisation. The highest valued team members, to my mind, are those that make things happen without having to be spoon-fed every step of the way.

A very simple example is – it’s raining and you are going out to meet a friend but you don’t want to get wet, so you solve the problem by using an umbrella, getting a taxi, changing the location/time of the appointment or even altering the appointment to a ‘virtual’ one so you don’t have to go out at all. Whatever you decide to do, you have used your creativity and initiative to solve a problem!

There will be many situations where you meet roadblocks from minor to major in the clan, figuring out on your own how to get past those and still complete the objective is an invaluable skill. Of course it is a viable option to ask for help in figuring it out if you can’t, we are a team and you will never stand alone. However, the more independent you are able to be the better as the less time someone has to spend managing you the more they have to utilize on other things thus leading to more efficiency over all.


As a member of our leadership team its very important to not only be in the loop of what is going on but also to contribute to it. I hear from a lot of new officers that they are too shy to say anything in the Opium Den / Legion HQ but having access to that gives you the absolute right and even a responsibility to offer your perspective for the benefit of our community. Remember that there is no such thing as a ‘stupid idea’, working together as a team we can take the best parts of many ideas and come up with something truly beautiful – if everyone contributes.

New ideas and different ways of doing things are invaluable to our organisation as stagnation is death. To that end you should have HQ Operations, Opium den, Announcements and your Division Subforum in your subscriptions so you are notified of every new topic going up.

There is also a lot of useful information in the member/reports section in our menu on the forums., including the last active report and the Code of Ops which every member should know inside and out.


Officers exist primarily to create an organised and enjoyable environment for Members to participate and win in online gaming. As a clan we don’t expect too much from people. Log into the website every few days unless you’ve communicated absence, teamspeak when in-game and loyalty. As an officer however we demand much more. If you do not have at least 2 hours most days to commit to working for the good of the clan stepping up to our ranks is not a path for you. We are the backbone of this community, the ones who ensure everything’s running smoothly and the clan is an enjoyable place to be. This takes dedication that quite simply most people are not prepared to give. Make sure you are.

Division Setup and Structure

Divisions will look different depending on the game at stake and the size of the division. In a game like SHK or other MMO’s you will have teams with around 10-15 people (small teams are ineffective) whereas a game like Dota2 or LoL it would only be 5 with maybe a reserve player or two. Either way, you are in charge of setting up teams and appointing team leaders to those teams. All teams require a team leader and a second in command. Try to ensure you pick someone that has some leadership experience combined with game experience of that particular game is your best choice for team leader. They will then in turn select their second in command.

However if the ideal person with both qualities is not available, ensure you prioritise someone with prior leadership experience or even someone with leadership potential over someone who is just good in that game. Leadership is the most valuable trait for those in command and support positions, with ingame skill only secondary in importance. Don’t make the mistake of picking someone who is excellent ingame to lead a team but they cannot support you or organise the team because they’re not leaders. That is a rookie mistake that is made too often within clans.

Division Management

Awards and Achievements

Its critical that you and your Vice recognise and reward great effort by your division. Everyone in this world operates on incentives, and when you give people incentives to do well, chances are they will do well. A good sign of an effective division is regular communication and public recognition (through posts) of great achievement and the awards those people received for their great achievements. You should, as a Division Commander, aim to give at least 1 x honour star per week to someone in each team, these include awards handed out by team leaders, not just directly from you. This is a guide only and can be more or less depending on circumstances, but don’t fall into the trap of never giving any of your hard working members awards and recognition. If someone did something extraordinary you can give them higher awards but in most cases an Honour Star is a great “thank you” for recognising our best members.

Rank and Events

Ensuring your team leaders or Vice have set events for your team to attend. This is a milestone of activity and allows members to progress to more senior ranks within the clan. Remember, incentive for members is key, and if you are a good Division Commander you will ensure your events happen and members get the attendance marked on their profiles. Your team leaders should check their profiles often, to see if they have met the requirements for advancement to the next rank, and if that is the case pass it to you or your Vice so the member can be listed in the end of month clan announcements for promotion. Remember, being promoted to the ranks of Veteran is a big deal and hard to achieve, so ensure you make sure your members get this the moment they meet the reqs. You should also encourage them to achieve these ranks.

Objective Management

The last important facet of Division Management is setting objectives for your Division. Team Leaders will need to create their own objectives. They will need to explain these to members and if you are not clear with your objectives the team will not get clear objectives.. Team Leaders will need to know how the objectives you give them affect the clan. They can then understand better the requirements of Leadership, how you want those requirements carried out and how to pass these along to the members of their teams.


Communication can be a tricky concept to master within a clan, particularly one with complex levels and multiple issues which arise from being in multiple games. When all parts of the clan communicate smoothly, it can improve effectiveness and overall activity because members and officers like being informed and kept up to date on happenings. No one likes not knowing what’s happening because the communication is poor. By making an effort to improve your communication processes, whether at the Clan Command, Legion Command, Division Command or Team Command level, you can build a stronger clan/legion/division/team that will have long lasting power in the game/s it represents.

Member Trust

Clear, open communication can create a sense of transparency in your organisation (whether at the Team or Division level), which builds trust between all the members (and officers) in it. Where keeping members in the dark can result in resentments, tension, and a feeling of officers not giving a shit, strong communication can help them feel valued and trusted and in turn the Team/Division can do more. Open communication can reduce feelings of uncertainty and cluelessness about the state of the Team or Division, which makes for a more-positive clan environment and members who feel that their membership means something as well as allowing them to help out to fix the issues or achieve the objectives. It’s important to note that the trust isn’t just downwards, but it’s upwards as well. By ensuring the Leader (if you are a Commander), or your Commander (if you are a Team Leader) is kept in the loop all the time about your plans and how you are achieving the goals and objectives they gave you, it will improve the trust from them to you. They may even grant you more responsibility knowing you don’t need to be micro-managed to see it done. Ideally, you want to communicate with both your superior officer AND your Team Leaders on at least a daily basis. Even if it’s just a quick forum PM or an announcement in your Division subforum.


Communication is essential to building relationships between all members and officers, both on a professional and social level. An atmosphere of open communication makes it safe for members to express their ideas; as a result, you will have the benefit of all your members and officers combined experience in coming up with innovative solutions. Communication prevents members from feeling isolated, builds teamwork, and creates a more collegial atmosphere in the group. When relationships are strong, members are better able to trust one another and work together more effectively, which in turn, increases activity (which is the key goal!).


In your Team or Division, confusion and ambiguity can create negative feelings and a tense atmosphere. By making roles and responsibilities clear to everyone in your Team or Division, you can give your members the information they need to get their jobs done; this is particularly important when your members are dispersed or come from different backgrounds. Communication reduces misunderstandings and cuts the costs associated with mistakes.


Communication can help your members collaborate effectively, which will make for a more-productive team / division overall. When you have multiple members who are working on different facets of the same project, communication can streamline the process and improve the end result. When your members/officers talk openly to each other, they can communicate potential issues, requirements and feedback that can make the result stronger. Communication can ensure that everyone is on the same page and prevent problems down the road.


DI offers both forums and Teamspeak for communication purposes, and it’s been found in clans that a good use of both is ideal for maintaining good communication. As an officer, it is your responsibility to ensure your members use both these platforms (not because they are mandatory to use by the Code of Ops), but because they IMPROVE COMMUNICATION within your Team and Division, which leads your Team/Division to be stronger and able to do more. An Officer should set the example and strive to maintain their post per day average above three, and take the effort to make announcements / updates in their Division Subforum just like Leadership do in the clan announcements section.


Communication with the Division Commander

As vice you have to assist in the Command of the Division in accordance with DI policy and Code of Ops and help to achieve the goals established by DI HQ Leadership (including commanding the division when the Commander is away).

As your commander will mainly focus on the strategy, take away some weight and ensure to:

  • Hand out awards and rewards to members according to their progress.
  • Help to achieve goals established by DI HQ Leadership.
  • Keep the pipelines full with new initiates due to recruiting.
  • Ensure every division member has a team and initiates are acknowledged and placed on the MDR.

Communication with the gatekeeper

Recruits will give you a hard time if you don’t act professionally. Communicate with the gatekeeper to make sure their applications are in order and the initiates know what is expected from them. The sign-up process has to be smooth, so ensure to:

  • Inform them on the requirements and make sure they know what we do and expect from them. It is important they understand the requirements before they join.
  • Help them to sign up and guide them through making their application if needed.
  • Acknowledge their application once it is accepted by the gatekeeper.
  • Ensure their profile reflects their division and game preferences (both primary and secondary).
  • Provide the necessary tags on teamspeak so it reflects who they are.

Communication with the team leaders

Now that the recruit is an official initiate, make sure the following is done:

  • Speak with your team leaders and place them in any of the teams according to their preference or where they are needed. Keep a nice balance between (experienced) members and initiates in a team as they will work together and learn from each other.

Communication with the initiate manager and mentor

As initiates will be future members of our community, make sure they are in the appropriate cohort and get a mentor. If this is not the case, communicate with the initiate manager to fix this.

Their mentor explains how the community and forums work, though you got to ensure they stay active. It is important to interact with the initiates daily and inform their mentor about possible improvements, their in game progress and absences.

Get them to meet the requirements. Part of the interacting is not only to know how they are doing, but to fulfill their requirements. Make sure they log in on a daily basis and ensure they know about enough content or make content to comment and/or discuss on.

The initiate has become a member. Congrats. Make sure to keep in contact with them and keep track of their progress as mentioned earlier this topic.

Technical Expertise

As a Division Commander, there are some things you must know how to do. DI has a raft of platforms and tools that are there at your disposal to ensure you run your team like a well oiled machine. Things you must know as a Division Commander are:

  • Knowing how to give an Award / Event Attendance.
  • Knowing how to assign TS rank/groups.
  • Knowing how to edit topics.
  • Knowing how to edit profiles.
  • Knowing how to Acknowledge Accepted Applications
  • Knowing how to strike a member/officer.

All Officers in DI have moderation skills and can do these tasks on TS / forums. If you are unsure how to do them ensure you raise them with your Legion Commander so you can be taught. Going into your division without these technical skills puts additional and unwanted strain on your the other officers, so if you don’t know, ask and learn!



Division Commanders should be rewarding their members for hard work and effort for ingame performances. Awards require specific details in their description.

If you are going to award a very prestigious award like 2nd Class Valor or even 3rd Class Valor, ensure you write a decent reason in the “reason” box.

Aim to have the following in your award when you give these awards:

What: Razed several enemies and captured a county by himself

When: During the war with House 3

Where: World 6 SHK

Outcome: Which allowed us to move other members into the county to secure the area.

So it reads something like:

Awarded to KonArtis for razing several enemies and capturing a county by himself during the war with House 3 in World 6 SHK. This allowed the rest of the division to move into the surrounding area for further follow on attacks.

Do not use generalist stuff like:

“Cause he was awesome” – not good enough, this is seen as too lazy to write something decent.

“He is great at helping in wars” – what wars? what game/server? is this counter strike or LoL???? When??

“Excellent team member and can always be counted on” – for what (be specific)? when? where? same as above…

“Best supplier there is” – based on what? what exactly did he do? when? where? is this in Minecraft? or SHK?

As the award will not go through!

You are allowed to be slightly more simplistic for an honor star, because you might need to copy/paste the same msg to several members which is fine.

But you can still try and be specific, for example:

Awarded for a joint team effort in capturing Devon during the war against H3 (which can be copy/pasted to several ppl)


You should use them for admin/community related stuff. Eg. A Captain might give a member a Bronze Commendation for being very active on the forums for the month of September. Or always being on teamspeak helping initiates settle into DI. Or a Commander gives their Vice a silver commendation for doing an outstanding job (well above what is expected) in ensuring the division administration is kept up to date etc. But there is some discretion here, you can also give Honor Stars for stuff like this. Try not to overdo the Commendation thing, when an Honor Star could have the same effect.

Use the Honor awards for ingame achievement and skill. So when someone gets Gold/Plat in LoL or does something significant in SHK for example, use honor awards.

How to Give an Award

To give an award to a member you need to create the award. This is done from the drop down menu ‘Create’ to the right of your username on the top right of the forums.


When you click ‘Award’ a new screen will popup for you to fill out the details of the award.


In member you put the member receiving the award. You can only put one at a time. The award section has a drop down list of all available award for you to select from. Finally the reason section is where you fill out the details of the award. Once finished hit the save button at the bottom.


Assigning TS Rank/Groups

When you are in command of a division you should always ensure your division have been assigned the correct groups on TS. These will vary depending on rank, position and the games they play. To change them right click on the person’s name in TS and select ‘Set Server Groups’. Click any additional groups they should be added to and/or click any groups they should be removed from. The member belongs to any groups that have a tick beside them.


Editing Topics

When you are in charge of a division you will have several topics that have vital information for your Division, as things change you may want to edit these topics to avoid having to create a new topic and lose all the replies from your Members. 

To edit a topic go to the bottom of the post you wish to edit and click the edit button.


Then make the changes to that post. If you are adding members type @ then start to type their name and a drop down list will appear keep typing till the name you want shows up then select it.


Once you are finished editing go to the bottom of the post. You can then add a reason for the edit and save or cancel the edit. To save it click ‘Edit Topic’. Cancel it if you have made any mistakes and want to return the topic to its previous version.


Editing Profiles

When you are in charge of a division you need to keep track of your division. Who is in the division, who has left the division. This is done for all of DI through the Master Division Registry (MDR). In order to be able to keep this up to date you need to know how to edit a profile. The MDR itself is automated, but you edit profile to assign people to teams and give them roles within the Division such as Vice, Team Leader or Second in Command.

To edit a profile go to the Members profile and on the banner image below the links, click the edit button.

Then scroll down to Division Information. The first drop down menu is used to change their Division and shouldn’t be used without a completed Division Transfer Request. In the second menu you can select what team to assign this Member to. The final menu is used to select their role with the team. 

The team roles are as follows:

  • TM – Team Member (Most common)
  • SUB – Substitute for a Competitive Team
  • 2IC – Second in Command of Team
  • TL – Team leader
  • HQ – This is assigned for HQ officers only & should never be set by Division Commander
  • DV – Division Vice
  • DC – Division Commander
  • Not Set – You need to assign one of the above to anyone with this.

Acknowledging Accepted Applications

When a Gatekeeper accepts an application to join DI both the Commander and Vice of the division the new Initiate is assigned to are mentioned in a message posted on the application. Either of them should then acknowledge the application. This is done by using Moderator Actions when you are viewing the application.


Be sure not to acknowledge any applications that have not been accepted by a Gatekeeper, as acknowledging them moves the application to ‘Current Initiates’ and posts the following message on the application:

Initiation Acknowledged.

Welcome to DI, make sure you PM me on forums if you have not already done so.

To acknowledge an application that has been accepted simply click ‘Moderation Actions’ while viewing the application and select ‘[Initiate] Initiate Acknowledged’.

Striking Members/Officers

As Division Commanders you may be required to strike (warn) members/officers for their action (or inaction) within game, on forums or on TS.

There are two ways you can issue a warning. The first is to go to a members profile. On the left hand side you will see any warnings a user has and a Warn User button. Click this to warn them. (ANY TYPE OF WARNING EXCEPT SPECIFIC FORUM CONTENT)


The second way is by hovering over the member’s name on one of their forum posts. This will give you a popup with some details of the user. In the bottom right of the popup is a cog wheel. Click this and a new menu will appear. Click warn user in this menu. (SHOULD BE USED FOR WARNING FOR THAT POST ONLY NOT GENERAL WARNING)


Either method will give you the same popup screen for issuing a warning. On this you need to fill out three sections. Firstly the reason. This is done from a drop down menu. The type of warning you issue will then fill out the number of points, the remove points date and time and the penalty as applicable. You then fill out the note for member explaining to them why you are issuing the strike, this should clearly state what they did wrong so they understand how to avoid further strikes for the same thing. Finally, you complete the note for moderators section. Again explaining the warning. You can also post any evidence you have to support the warning here.


Once you have filled everything in press the issue warning button on the bottom right.

Recommended Battle Rhythm

You can run your Division how you choose, within the limits of the Code of Operations of Damage Inc. But if you are not sure how / what to do on a daily / weekly basis, here is a recommended guide to get you started which you can modify as you become comfortable:

Daily Tasks:

  • When you log on, check with your Vice for any updates from that day or for updates to the objectives you assigned from team leaders.
  • Check the MDR to ensure the information displayed about your Division is accurate and up to date, if it isn’t, inform your Vice of the discrepancies, and fix it.
  • Check on the progress of all your teams with the team leaders from the objectives you have posted in your Division Subforum. You can do this check by either talking to them on TS if they’re online, getting them to post daily in your objectives topic, or to PM you on forums. The latter two are preferred because it means you will get the update even if they are not online. Take note of who is doing really well, you will award them later. Those who are not so good, talk to them and find out why.
  • Check with your Vice if any admin/member/officer issues have occurred, if yes, deal with them if your Vice hasn’t already.
  • Check your with your Vice to see if any team leaders notified them of members due for promotion.
  • Check the Away section as well as the Clan Management (under the “Other” menu tag), to ensure none of your Officers are on Probation or Away, and if they are, you are aware of it. They may need to be replaced if they are on Probation or will be away for more than a few days.

Weekly Tasks:

  • Update your Division Objectives topic. You may have no new objectives but it is still important to show what progress is being made, if teams see a task getting close to completion it may give them the extra push needed to get it done.
  • Check for posts regarding team updates. Your team leaders should be posting these to help you keep track of the teams. If they aren’t posted ask the team leaders why not and inform them of the importance of these topics for your role and their benefit.
  • Check to ensure each team has an Official Event scheduled for the week, either as part of your Division, or for their Team only.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict is a natural part of human nature. Put two people in a room together for long enough and they’ll have a disagreement about something. Increase the number of folks and that chance raises exponentially.

In a gaming clan of 100s of members there can be arguments every day from basic bickering all the way up to rage quits! The main thing to remember is bolded in massive writing above. Conflict is nothing to fear and as officers it is all of our responsibility to deal with it immediately.

For example, Bob and Harry in your division have a small disagreement over who is the better gamer. Though it starts off friendly, voices begin to raise and insults creep in. If no action is taken worst case it escalates, they start avoiding each other and in the end Harry rage quits because Bob kills him in a match a month later. However, had you stepped in and resolved things early they would both still be happy members working together for the success of DI.

So how does one go about solving conflict? In the following order in most cases:

Take Action

Don’t just sit back and watch; leadership is not a spectator sport. Take control of the situation. Depending on severity levels of the discord there are multiple things you can do from changing the subject, separating the participants, mediating on the spot to even banning one/both/all temporarily from ts/forums for a time out.

Identify the Issue

What is really going on here? It’s important to understand the root of the problem so you can tailor your response accordingly. Learn and practice active listening – the art of rephrasing what someone has just said to you for the purpose of confirming understanding. Don’t take Sides

It can be easy to get pulled into things, lose objectivity, perspective and even your cool. Remember you are there to mediate and solve problems not create them. Calm, patience and respect are three invaluable principles. If you find yourself losing any of the three walk away, set a time in the future (and keep it!) to re-address the issue and consider taking it to the chain of command for support.

Provide Resolution

When intervening you take responsibility of the situation along with that control. At this point it is now up to you to work with the parties involved and make sure there is a solution to the issue. That can mean anything from simply monitoring for a short time to make sure no hostilities break out again up to involving the justice system for official mediation. This is where you are talking 90% of the time and listening 10% of the time.

In closing, conflict is normal. How we deal with it is important because left alone small resentments can breed into massive drama bandwagons that rip apart communities. An understanding of that and proactive attitude towards resolving issues quickly and respectfully will ensure DI remains a fun and safe environment for us all.

The process

If you see someone committing a breach of Discipline, and:

  1. There is an Officer online from their Division (and not afk!, they must be responsive to a poke), then
    • Poke the Officer, and let them know what you just witnessed.
    • That Officer is to investigate, and issue Strikes as required/Suspend from Forums/TeamSpeak as required etc.
  2. There is NO Officer online from their Division, or the Officer is NOT responding to a TeamSpeak poke, then
    • The Officer who witnessed the discipline breach is to issue the Strike/s, and Suspend from TeamSpeak/Forums as deemed reasonably necessary (ensuring the Strike entry contains evidence (if applicable/where possible), but if not, the officer’s word is enough as we are all assumed honest and trustworthy).
    • The Officer who witnessed the discipline breach is then to PM the Commander, Vice and Team Leader of the offender, notifying them of the breach that occurred, and the actions taken (including any strikes/suspensions).
    • The Commander, Vice and Team Leader can then view the Strike (including the circumstances, evidence if there is any etc) in the member’s profile.

If there is a disagreement with a strike

If the Team Leader of the offender does not agree with any aspect of the Strike issued (either the quantity, the type of offence struck for, the reason for striking etc), they must take the case to their Commander, who must review all the facts and determine whether the Strike is deserved and abides with DI‘s Code of Ops.

It is important to note that

  • Even after consideration of a Commander’s disagreement, the Justice Committee may rule that the Strike stands.
  • The Commander (or anyone) must not intimidate, berate, insult or attack the Witnessing Officer in anyway, as they are the ones who did what is expected of them as an Officer at the time the event took place, and upheld the discipline of DI in the absence of an officer from the offender’s division.
  • If the member decides not to appeal their strike, then the Strike will stand regardless of whether the Commander believe it unreasonable or not.
  • The Commander is not obliged to challenge a Strike of one of their members, even if one of their Division Officers believe it was unreasonable.


  • All Officers have the Right to Strike any member, regardless of Division, as long as the conditions above have been met.
  • The purpose of allowing cross-division discipline enforcement is to ensure that members do not take advantage of AFK or offline opportunities to breach the Discipline code set forth by Damage Inc.

Strike Count

  • Initiates
    • Initiates are removed at 3 strikes.
  • Members
    • At 5 strikes they are placed on probation automatically by the system. At 6 strikes the member is removed from the clan and blacklisted..
  • Officers (all ranks)
    • Same as with members. Officers are held in higher regard and it is often appropriate to demote officers accruing regular or significant amounts of strikes. This decision is to be made by their direct chain of command. if you have concerns regarding another officer notify their superior officer(s).

Types of Warnings/Strikes



  • Useless/Trolling Content (Rarely used: Only if persistent and isn’t carrying on any conversation or banter)
    • First Offence: hide posts, verbally warn the member (e.g. PM)
    • Second Offence: As above + strike.
    • Third Offence : As above + Forum suspension.
  • Malicious spam
    • Go to their profile, on the right under user tools: Hit Flag as spammer. Their posting rights will be removed immediately, protecting our members and our forum. If their profile contains any links or anything, remove these immediately to prevent any possible damage or link traffic.

Offensive Posts/PM’s:

  • Minor abusive behaviour
    • Small level flame/excessive trolling against others in DI. Actions that fall under minor abusive behavior are cyber bullying, discriminatory or inappropriate speech against others to induce emotional pain, purposeful annoyance, etc.
  • Major abusive behaviour
    • Excessive flame/harassment against others in DI. Actions that fall under major abusive behavior are attack of one’s religion, ethnicity, gender, family member, personal property, etc.

Failing to Notify of Attendance:

  • This is simple, the user receives the designated strike
    • You are required to post your availability/ability to attend Official Events relating to your Team, Division or Clan on the events calendar.



  • Intentionally using a new/secondary ID with the intent to bypass any ban, restriction or other discipline or activity management system
    • Instant perm/long term ban of the secondary ID, no warning is needed after the ID has been confirmed as being the same member.
    • Consider strikes for disobeying orders or other similar offenses as appropriate depending on the system bypassed.
  • Pretending to be someone else, or showing an offensive name
    • Warn – first offence, verbal/text chat warning.
    • Kick – kick from channel/server as appropriate
    • Ban – Temp Ban from the server and issue a strike. (for example 6 h)
      • Depending on their name/associated behaviour they can receive a strike for:
        • Minor/major offensive behaviour
        • Failing to comply with orders
        • Inciting unrest
        • Lack of Officer Qualities Displayed


Descriptions are set by server admins and should include a verified forum username. This can be followed by something amusing or descriptive.

  • Inappropriate or incorrect descriptions
    • Contact a server admin (red wrench)

Stuck-Mics and Similar:

  • If someone has got continuous/erroneous activation, or if someone else has come on their teamspeak.
    • Warn – Try to contact the member to inform them their mic is stuck or friends have hijacked their TS
    • Kick/Isolate – isolate to drunk tank or kick from channel/server as appropriate.
    • Ban – Temp Ban from the server. (for example 1 h)
    • If it is a stuck mic and they were aware but refused to rectify the problem, strike for fail to comply. If they remained unaware or were simply unable to rectify the problem, take no further action. If they were banned, inform the member via PM with an explanation.

Offensive/Disrespectful Behaviour:

  • Toxic players will be dealt with accordingly
    • Warn – issue verbal or text chat warning.
    • Kick/Isolate – isolate to drunk tank or kick from channel/server as appropriate.
    • Ban – Temp Ban from the server. (for example 6 h)
    • For extreme cases advise their superior officers/leadership to seek perma ban.
    • Depending on language and behaviour they can receive a strike for:
      • Minor/major offensive behaviour
      • Failing to comply with orders
      • Inciting unrest
      • Lack of Officer Qualities Displayed


Disobeying Orders:

Any orders given by a DI officer with authority over them* must be obeyed in a timely fashion. The only exception is where the orders are deemed impossible (“Give me X”, “I don’t have X”) or inappropriate by the member, at which point THEY must contact an officer with authority over the person giving the order immediately (Teamspeak). Or else carry out the order and issue a complaint within their command chain at the earliest opportunity.

Straightforward, if you are asked to do something by a certain deadline from a ranking officer then do it. Discipline is paramount to the success of any clan, so ensure you display the highest levels of it.

  • Member should be verbally/text chat warned at least once.
  • If they continue to refuse they should be given a strike for fail to comply.

*Direct command chain:

Legion Commander > First Commander > Commander > Vice > Team Leader > 2nd in Command > Member/initiate

(Here rank matters)


Indirect command chain : Leader > HQ > Division > Non-Division

(Here role matters more than rank: a lower rank HQ officer may order, within their role, a division commander and Higher ranked officers from other divisions must obey the “home” divisions orders within game)


Not Idling in Teamspeak

As per DI rules, you are required to be in TS when ingame and/or on Steam. By not doing so you are hurting the clan.

If an officer is aware a member is playing a game, ESPECIALLY (but not only) one in which DI is involved, they are duty bound to issue the above named strike. The only exception is where there are documented valid reasons. I.E: they are physically unable to access teamspeak at work but can access the game, or they have mates round to play a completely separate game and have informed officers. In these cases it is the officer’s decision if they are within the rules.

Non Committed Members

Commanders are authorised to place members within their Division on Probation if they meet the following conditions:

  • The Member has not attended an Official Event for 30 days, AND/OR
  • The Member has failed to make a post in 7 days

This is due to some teams being greatly affected by members who are ‘there’ but are not. It is important to note that not posting within a 7 day period or attending an event in 30 days will not automatically get the member placed on Probation. It is at the Commanders discretion and based on a variety of different factors such as members attitude, historic performance, whether real life has a part to play, etc… and it acts as the minimum ‘checks and balance’ that must be satisfied for a member to be placed on Probation due to non commitment reasons.

Getting off Probation requires high levels of event attendance and forum activity, which is seen as a better ‘half way’ step to try and help a member rather than just removing them from DI.

Achieving and Maintaining Honour

The Ultimate Responsibility of the Command Position

Whether its at the Team, Division, Legion or Clan level, the respective Command Position is ultimately responsible for maintaining their Team/Division/Legion/Clan’s compliance. Each level of Command requires an increasingly practiced hand at managing its affairs, and not remaining compliant could have a range of adverse effects. From losing a Team within a Division (moderate loss), the disbandment of a Division within the clan (heavy loss), the removal of a Legion within the clan (severe loss) to the death of the Clan itself (catastrophic). Its therefore imperative that Team Leaders, Division Commanders Legion Commanders and the Clan Leader ensure maintaining compliance is their number one priority, as it directly relates to survival and growth of the entire clan. The Support Staff are also responsible to help those in the Command Position meet and maintain compliance.

The Honor

At the end of the day, attaining “Division” or “Super Division” status is an honor within DI that must be earned and maintained. Losing this status is a blow to clan morale and a setback for overall clan strategy, and everything must be done to prevent such outcomes.

Attaining and Maintaining the Honour – Division

  • Maintain 25+ members on the Master Division Registry.
  • All Teams in Division are Compliant.
  • Division Vice and Team Leaders appointed.
  • Maintain 2 – 9 Teams.
  • Post 1 or more Division Announcement per month.

To attain the status

  • A Venture Team must reach 25+ members on the Master Division Registry of which at least 8+ are full members OR 30+ members on the Master Division Registry (full member count is not taken into account in this case).
  • Host 3 events per week.

Officer Allocation

  • 1 x Commander (Command Position)
  • 1 x Vice (Support Position)

Attaining and Maintaining the Honour – Super Division

  • Super Division is measured on the MDR under each division with a counter called “SD: X Days”
  • Maintain 50+ members on the Master Division Registry.
  • All Teams in Division are Compliant.
  • Maintain 4 – 9 Teams.
  • Host 1 or more Official Division-Wide Events per month.

To attain the status

  • A Division must reach 50+ members on the Master Division Registry.
  • Maintain 50+ members for 90 days.
  • Division has been commanded by the same Commander successfully for 3+ months (changing Commander’s resets this).

Officer Allocation

  • 1 x General (Command Position)
  • 1 x Vice (Support Position)

MDR Compliance

In order to track certain aspects of Unit Compliance, the Master Division Registry has to reflect correctly every position filled in a Division, every Team formed inside a Division and the size of a Division.

The following timelines will be enforced, should a unit on the MDR become non-compliant:

  • Teams: 1 week window to return to compliance or adverse actions will be taken against it’s leadership or be disbanded.
  • Divisions: 2 week window to return to compliance or adverse actions will be taken against it’s leadership or be downgraded to Venture Team.
  • Legions: 30 day window to return to compliance or adverse actions will be taken against it’s leadership or it may be folded into another Legion.

Failure by a respective group leader will be managed as follows:

  • First Instance: Counseling from respective Chain of Command
  • Second Instance: Strike for “Negligence in Officer Duties”
  • Third Instance: Non-negotiable demotion

*if a 3 month period between instances has passed, the escalation level resets

Clan vs Clan

We need to ensure that we remain organised and poised to engage in fighting vs other clans. There are two positions within the clan that need to communicate regularly for Clan vs Clan. These are Division Vices and Team Leaders.

The Division Vices responsibilities for Clan vs Clan are:

  • Are authorised to speak to “Established” clans that Damage Inc has fought already at least a couple of times, to arrange new CvC matches.
  • Is responsible for ensuring that every Competitive Team (eg. not Casual Teams) in their Division gets at least 1 x CvC per month.
  • Need to liaise with the Team Leaders to ensure times, schedules etc are pre-planned and reasonable (not unrealistic).
  • Are authorised to assign CvC matches to Team Leaders in their Divisions, that Team Leaders MUST prepare for and ensure their teams attend.
  • Responsible for putting the CvC on the Calendar and in the Clan vs Clan forum (including using the correct format).

Given the fast-paced environment that involves CvC action. the Division Vices don’t have days to wait for a response from Team Leaders, so to prevent this.

Vices who are not prepared and cannot immediately Commit a team when pressed will be deemed negligent in their duties. Its crucial that the Vice is then organized and prepared so not to embarrass Damage Inc in front of other clans.

As a Team Leader, if you are constantly having people in your team who “cannot make it”, you should relegate them back to the Casual Teams. Competitive Teams are not for everyone, and being in a Competitive Team requires a higher level of commitment than a Casual Team.

I see too many Comp teams who are not ready to be competitive. The 1x CvC per comp team per month will test each team’s readiness in DI and whether they can commit the the rigorous demands that comes with training 4+ times a week, and then fighting it out on the battlefield. Because at the end of the day, this is what we need if we are going to get sponsorship. So to sum it all up:

Be Ready. Train Hard. Fight Harder.

Chain of Command

In any organisation, the chain of command refers to levels of authority held by each level from the top position, such as a Leader, down to troops on the front line. Good clans institute a chain of command to provide members at all levels with a supervisor to whom they may ask questions or report problems. An effective chain of command also spreads out the work involved with running the organisation, so the weight is not just on the leader’s shoulders.

Establishment of the Hierarchy

The chain of command establishes the clan hierarchy. Leadership occupy the top tier in DI‘s chain of command. Legion Commanders report to Leadership, First Commander assist Legion Commanders. Division Commanders report to Legion Commander or First Commanders, Division Vice assists Division Commander. Team Leaders report to Division Commander or Division Vice, Second in Commands assist Team Leaders. Members report to Team Leaders and Second in Commands. Each clan establishes its own hierarchy or organisational structure, which is the basis for a chain of command. All members in the clan recognise the structure of the organisation when following a chain of command.

Responsibility and Authority

Each members on the chain of command is responsible for a particular area of the running the clan. For example, Junior Officers acting as Team Leaders in a Division must ensure that members complete goals and objectives assigned to the team by the Division Commander, while Senior Officers and Leadership establish the high-level direction the clan takes. For example, a Division Commander may develop a plan to improve that Divisions recruitment rate and its expansion, but Team Leaders directing the activities of members execute this higher level plan. When a member doesn’t follow the established chain of command, he undermines the authority of his direct supervisor. Therefore the chain of command should not be broken, unless an issue involves the direct supervisor in a bad way or the supervisor is not online to manage the issue.


An established chain of command creates efficiency when reporting problems or communicating with members. For example, when a member communicates a problem directly to his/her Division Commander, the Team Leader doesn’t have an opportunity to correct the problem. Division Commanders, while familiar with higher-level strategies issued by Leadership and planning involving them, aren’t prepared to correct operational issues or the day-to-day activities of front-line members, which is why competent Team Leaders are essential to the running of Divisions. It’s more efficient to direct complaints or report problems or even report good things like progress or updates on the objectives to the officer at the lowest level before escalating the issue to Senior Officers or Leadership.

Effect on Morale

When members frequently ignore the chain of command, it may affect the morale of Junior and Senior Officers. Clans without a clear chain of command can create an atmosphere of uncertainty and chaos, which affects the morale of all members in the clan. Poor clan morale may lead to high member turnover and lower activity, which is the deathbed for any clan that isn’t careful.


It is important that an Officer, whether Junior or Senior, take the Chain of Command seriously. As a Junior Officer you should not be PMing the Leadership directly, unless the problem involves your Commander in a bad way or they are not online for instance. You should also enforce the Chain of Command within your team or division. But like all things, Chain of Command can be overdone. So being clear on expectations whilst also remaining flexible is important, for example:

A member should be able to go either his Team 2nd-in-Command OR the Team Leader. Just as a Team Leader should be able to go to either the Division VIce OR Commander (depending on urgency/importance etc). However, DI allows its officers to set their own rules within their teams/divisions, so the above example is just a recommendation.

As you can see above Division Command are part of DI Division Structure. The chain of command for Divisions is as follows (Lowest to Highest):

  • Team Member
  • 2nd in Command
  • Team Leader
  • Division Vice
  • Division Commander

Division Command also report to the Clan HQ, as you can see above. The chain of command for reporting to HQ is as follows (Lowest to Highest):

  • 2nd in Command
  • Team Leader
  • Division Vice

  • Chief of Staff
  • Chief Aide-de-Camp
  • Leader

Any higher ranking officer may question your actions or give you instructions but these are who you report problems to. Make sure to respect the chain of command and go to the person directly above you first. You should only go higher up the chain on urgent issues when the person directly above you is unavailable.

You should add all officers between you and anyone higher up the chain of command to any communications with higher ranking officers. This way when your ranking officers log on next they know what has happened.
